Inspired by an array of artists and innovators including The Cure, Aurora, Florence + The Machine, Lamb, and Sigur Ros, Kat Bryan’s distinctive vocal style, powerful production and highly relatable lyrical themes have resonated with fans and critics alike. Reviews of her debut album heralded her as “a complete professional with visionary insight” (Sleeping Bag Studios) and an artist that “certainly invites the listener to expand their musical boundaries” (The Electricity Club).
This is electronic pop music that shines a light into its own dark heart, embracing and celebrating the change that comes from times of struggle. Piano, synth, electronic percussion and ethereal backing vocals serve as the perfect foil to a warm, emotive vocal style that has invited favourable comparisons with the likes of Doris Day and Ilene Woods. Describing the EP’s genesis and themes, Kat says:
“As a follow-up piece to my full-length album, Music for the End of World, Luna has a decidedly brighter tone. Music for the End of the World was written during a very transitory time in my life, and also during the beginning and height of the global pandemic. It takes on a lot of emotions pertaining to finding your way. Luna by comparison is the result of years of personal growth, artistic exploration, and embracing of a new way of existing.”
Like her previous work, this EP is very much the product of a period of inner reflection and personal growth, not so much a directional shift from Music for the End of the World, but a natural evolution in sound and meaning. She continues:
“The title Luna comes from the luna moth, a very beautiful but rarely seen variety of moth. A number of years ago I had a dream where the apartment I was living in was covered in dust, cobwebs and cocoons. As I started to clear away the dust, the cocoons all split open revealing a beautiful swarm of blue and green moths and butterflies. Since that dream, moths have become a recurring image in my life and I somehow see them everywhere.
“The historic symbolism of moths is transformation and change. In some places they are also a sign of moving towards the light and new beginnings. As I moved from a place of trauma into a place of healing, this symbolism felt very poignant. I chose the luna moth specifically as it is an incredibly beautiful and ethereal looking creature, but its name also references the lunar cycle, moon phases, and the passage of time, which also felt particularly relevant to me.
“Lyrically, the five songs on Luna have messages of hope and of emerging. While it is clear the journey isn’t over, the songs come from a place of overcoming fears and trials and looking ahead at future challenges.
“Sonically, with the exception of Armour, the songs have a brightness to them, with less emphasis on heavy and dark bass synths and more concentrated use of ethereal and vibrant sounding keys. Armour is the fiercest song on the EP, as the anthem for reclaiming your life. Lush and full remains a big part of my musical palette as I blend reverb and delay-heavy keys and synths with layered backing vocals and trip-hop inspired drums.”
